How College Students Can Spend Less Time on Their Phones

In today’s world, we all spend a ton of time on our phones. For college students, phones are not just for communication but also their social lives, TV shows, games, and connection to the world. However, excessive phone usage can lead to distractions, decreased productivity, and school struggles. Here’s some small steps students can take to minimize their phone use.

Set Boundaries

Identify where they are using their phone most. For many students this is when they’re relaxing or when they should be getting work done. They need to figure out what they are doing at these exact times: Instagram? Snapchat? Texting? Reading ESPN.com? Setting specific times for phone use throughout the day, such as checking messages only during breaks or limiting social media to a specific hour each day can help students. Using tools like screen time trackers to monitor usage can help students stay accountable.

Turn Off Notifications

Far too often, it is difficult just to have a texting (or email) conversation with students because their phone is inundated with notifications. They can’t even find next text messages coming because they’re getting buried among an onslaught of snapchat, tiktok, instagram, and other messages. Constant notifications can be a major distraction too. We always want to see the message or picture we just received. Students should turn off non-essential alerts for apps like social media, games, and news. This way, they’ll check their phone less and the more essential messages will be easier to find.

Create Phone-Free Zones

Designate certain areas or times as phone-free zones. For example, if a student is at the library, they should leave their phone in their backpack. This helps stay present and focused on the task we’re working on. If a student is able to designate some areas on campus where their phone gets put away, they usually become much more productive.

Use Focus Apps

Ironically, your phone can help you use it less. Apps like Forest, StayFocusd, or Freedom can block distracting apps and encourage you to stay off your phone. These tools are great for building healthier habits over time.

By implementing one or more of these strategies, students can spend less time on your phone and more time being productive. Remember, it’s not about eliminating phone use entirely but finding a balance that works.
