Transitioning to College as a Neurodivergent Student

The move from high school to college is a major life transition for any student, but for neurodivergent students—those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or other neurological differences—it often presents an extra layer of complexity that’s not always visible or acknowledged.

In high school, many neurodivergent students benefit from structured environments, consistent routines, and individualized support plans like IEPs or 504 plans. College, however, brings a sudden shift: less structure, more personal responsibility, and fewer built-in accommodations. While support services are available at most universities, students often have to seek them out independently, navigate bureaucracy, and self-advocate in new and unfamiliar ways. That can be overwhelming, especially during a time when everything—from living arrangements to social dynamics—is changing.

Executive functioning challenges, common in many forms of neurodivergence, can make managing time, keeping track of assignments, and maintaining routines difficult without external support. Sensory sensitivities can turn crowded dining halls or noisy dorms into sources of distress. And while many students struggle socially at first, neurodivergent students may face deeper difficulties in making connections or feeling understood.

For many students in this population, an executive function coach is the right level of support they need as they start college. Working with a coach on a regular basis can help provide new strategies, systems, and routines that promote growth, independence, and academic success. Not to mention, there’s goal setting and accountability that can help a student who may need a bit more guidance at the start of undergrad.

College can be a place of growth and success for neurodivergent students. But first, it’s important to recognize the hidden barriers—and work together to learn, grow, and find success on campus. It’s never too early, so families of high school seniors can be exploring the different options for the student even as they’re getting close to their graduation.
