Everyone tells students to go to office hours, but many students are hesitant. Students often wonder… What would I say? What if I don’t have a “real” question? What if it’s just me and the professor sitting there? What if it is weird?
What students forget is that all they need to do is show up! There is no right or wrong way to use office hours, and professors and TAs will be happy to see you regardless of your progress in the course. For those needing encouragement to make an appointment, try these simple openers:
- “I’m working on this assignment…”
- “Here’s what I’ve tried…”
- “This is where I’m getting stuck…”
- “I’m not sure where to start…”
- “How can I prepare for…”
- “Can you help me understand…”
Professors and TAs are not judging you. They’re usually sitting there hoping someone comes in. They are seasoned pros and can help you identify the questions you didn’t know you had. You’re not bothering them; you’re using office hours exactly as they hoped you would!
What if you feel like everything is going well? Don’t wait until things get tough. Office hours are just as helpful when you’re mostly okay but want to:
- check if you’re on the right track
- understand what a strong answer looks like
- avoid small mistakes before they turn into bigger ones
- connect with the professor about other opportunities related to the course
It might feel awkward the first time, and that’s normal. But that feeling goes away quickly, usually after one visit!
You don’t need a perfect question, you just need a place to start.
